Ministry team at JC after brutal student attack goes viral
Tension is rising at Jamaica College after authorities confirmed the school as the scene of a brutal student-on-student attack captured in a chilling viral video.
A team from the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information has since moved into the institution as investigations intensify into the incident that has sparked outrage across the island.
The ministry had initially declined to name the school, but officials are now on location at JC, including Parliamentary Secretary Senator Marlon Morgan, along with the national coordinator for school safety and security and a team of guidance counsellors.
The move follows the circulation of a 56-second video over the weekend showing a student being surrounded and attacked by several boys in uniform.
In the clip, one student is seen gripping the victim by the collar and repeatedly slapping him in the face, while another lashes him multiple times with what appears to be a belt.
Adding to the disturbing nature of the incident, the boy delivering the blows is heard questioning the victim about money during the assault.
The Education Ministry had earlier described the video as "disturbing" and an example of "extreme violence meted out to a student," prompting an immediate investigation.
Speaking with The STAR, Morgan said the ministry will provide updates after gathering key information as the probe continues.
Details surrounding when the incident took place remain unclear.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine what led to the attack and what actions will be taken against those involved.
