My landlord is a peeping tom

Dear Pastor,

I have a serious, personal concern. It has been three months since I moved to this apartment which I share with my landlord. I have rented from him one room and bathroom and we share the kitchen. I realised recently that my landlord has been peeping on me. He watches my every move. If my boyfriend picks me up to go out, he watches what I wear. He is just watching my life.

I am young, sexy and I have a lot going on. Recently, he has been hanging around in the hallway or the staircase, next to my room. The kitchen is downstairs. My bathroom is next to the staircase, so ever turn I make he is strategically located. He is 50 years old and divorced. Do you think that he is secretly asking me, for sex?

I never had anything in my mind about him, but for two consecutive nights I dreamt that someone was breaking into my apartment. I never saw the face of the person in my dream, yet it appeared to be the same landlord. I asked him if he ever had a break-in. He said, 'No'. He went on to give me safety suggestions. I told him once that I was followed home to my boyfriend's apartment. He said, "When you live alone, you dream all sorts of stuff". I don't know if that is so. Then he said, "I bet if you were in a man's bed you would be alright."

Pastor, as he knows that I have a boyfriend, what is he really getting at? The JPS bill came and at 11:54 in the night, that man forwarded the message to my phone. I was so upset. I wasn't asleep. I was tuned in to your show but, at the same time, it is only my boyfriend who text me those hours when he sleeps and wakes up feeling horny and sends me naughty lines. Up to now, I am upset with my landlord with his sneaky stuff.

Since I have been here, my boyfriend hasn't come to visit me, except to pick me up. One day I was sleeping and my landlord claims he was making changes to the apartment. I woke up and opened my door. There he was with two tradesmen. I was so frightened. My heart leaped. They knew I wasn't aware that they were in the apartment. There is another room adjacent to my room and it was unoccupied. I heard him discussing what he wants to do to the place. To make matters worse, he pretended to fix my window which was closed. What I really figured out was that he wanted to know if I had my boyfriend in my room. My windows were closed and he was trying to peep into my room. It is like this man wants to catch me in the nude.

I deliberately don't dress in skimpy or sexy clothes around the apartment. I am always covered. I dress in the dark because I don't know if he has cameras watching me. I do not bend in his presence. I listen to my soca music loud when he isn't around. When he is around, I turn it down low just for me alone to hear. Landlords must stop harassing their tenants.

I have not discussed this with my boyfriend. I touched on it once and he was furious, so he doesn't come around.

S.

Dear S.,

Evidently, this man is very happy to have a young, sexy girl as his tenant; and, from what you have written, he is not only admiring you but would love to have an intimate relationship with you. It seems to me that your boyfriend did not have a say when you agreed to take the apartment. But even if he had, he probably would not have thought that this man would have wanted to have an intimate relationship with you.

Your landlord is out of order and I do not believe that his house is a safe place for you to live. You should seek another apartment and move as soon as possible.
