Arnett secure big win over Cavalier in playoff race
Arnett Gardens FC secured an important win in their race for a playoff spot in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL), as they defeated Cavalier SC 2-1 on Thursday night at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Kevaughn Wilson scored a brace on either side of half-time with strikes in the fourth and 47th minutes of the contest.
Adrian Reid Jr (90+5) pulled one back for Cavalier in the dying minutes.
Arnett started better and immediately went hunting for the opening goal.
Jermy Nelson had a prime opportunity in the fourth minute with two attempts from within six yards, but both shots were cleared off the line by the goalkeeper.
MADE AMENDS
Wilson made up for the missed opportunity just a minute later, sneaking the ball into the near post from a cut back to the edge of the box.
The Junglists continued to pressure and should have doubled their lead when Fabian Reid broke through down the left.
However, Reid could not find the right finishing touch as his attempt went wide of the mark.
Arnett continued to pressure and Wilson went close to a first-half brace at the half-hour mark, but his shot was charged down by Cavalier's defenders.
Just like he did in the first half, Wilson hit the back of the net just minutes into the second half with a well-taken effort just two minutes after the restart.
Both teams exchanged chances but neither could find a goal as time ran down.
Cavalier finally found their goal, albeit a consolation effort, through Reid in time added.
With the win, Arnett moved to 49 points in seventh place, closing the gap on sixth-place Cavalier on 52.
With three games left in the regular season, it will be a close race for the sixth and final playoff spot between both teams.
OTHER GAMES
In other games across the league, 10-man Portmore United, second on 62 points, got the better of last-place Spanish Town Police (26) 1-0 at Royal Lakes.
Despite Nickoy Gayle being shown a red card in the 53rd minute, Tarick Ximines was on hand to give Portmore the win with a strike in the 63rd.
The loss meant Spanish Town slumped to their fourth straight loss at the foot of the table and on the brink of relegation.
They have three games left to pull off the improbable, but are still mathematically capable of avoiding the drop.
Second-from-bottom Harbour View (33), another team fighting for survival, suffered a heavy defeat as they were crushed 4-0 by eighth-place Dunbeholden (48).
Mount Pleasant, second on 65, got the better of ninth-place Chapelton Maroons (46) 5-2 in a seven-goal thriller at Drax Hall, while Treasure Beach clipped Waterhouse 2-1 to keep their hopes of survival alive.
Treasure Beach, 12th on 34 points, scored a 2-1 upset over fourth-place Waterhouse (59) at Drewsland Mini Stadium in another night game.
