Fashion meets football ‘Fans’ embrace stylish new World Cup energy
Die-hard football fans are already locked in on tactics, formations and starting line-ups, but a sexier side of the World Cup is unfolding on the ground at poolside hangouts and beach watch parties, where women are fully embracing the game while pairing jerseys with strappy fashion.
Twenty-four-year-old Tamoya Matthews is embracing her World Cup identity on the sexier, more social side of the tournament —and she is unapologetic about it.
“As a non-football fan, I prefer Brazil because the first jersey I ever got was a Brazil jersey, so I just work with it. The whole Jamaica supports Brazil, so why not.”
Matthews models jerseys for Swim Haus Ltd, owned by Xao Haughton, as part of the company's football-inspired outfit showcase. The collection blends football jerseys with swimwear and resort fashion, catering to women who want to embrace the World Cup atmosphere while expressing their personal style.
For Matthews, the World Cup experience is less about tactics and more about vibe and visibility. She enjoys styling her jersey with trendy outfits and soaking up the excitement that comes with the tournament, saying the energy, social scene and festive mood make the experience enjoyable, even for those who are not actively following the matches.
“I normally rock my jersey with a cute little shorts,” she said. The fun and excitement around World Cup season is top-tier. You don’t have to watch the game, just a drink in your hand, the vibe, and being in the atmosphere is really fun.”
That freedom to participate without pressure is what she enjoys most.
“I like that I can be myself and I can find different ways to style the jersey so I don’t feel left out. As much as how the men watch and understand the football, I can be at the pool in my swimwear and still be a part of the experience.”
Her ideal World Cup watch party is simple but high-energy.
“Big screen, lots of liquor, food for sure, and in a good space where the energy is booming and everyone is excited,” she said. “I’d definitely go to a finals match. I would definitely want to go and experience it.”
And while Matthews admits she is not the most dedicated football fan, she is hoping Neymar’s team lifts a sixth World Cup.
“I hope the team wins, but I’m not here for the hat-tricks, I’m here for the theatrics,” Matthews said smiling.
