Woman’s fridge goes for a swim in floodwaters
Ofilia Williams, a resident of Old Harbour Bay, St Catherine, laughed hysterically yesterday as she explained how floodwaters from Tropical Storm Elsa crept into her kitchen and caused her refrigerator to float.
She stated that she had to make light of the situation as minutes earlier, she was watching other homes being inundated.
"After mi go check pon mi business, mi deh out a road a talk and watch people house a flood out and mi get a call say me mus come because mi fridge inna di kitchen a swim. I am 32 years old and a di first mi see dis. Mi fridge a swim dung di place. All now mi don't know if anyting wrong with it because mi nuh plug it in" she said as she doubled over in laughter.
Williams was captured on video stating that she needed justice for her refrigerator as she stood barefooted and watched as water drenched her yard and kitchen. She told the news team that to prevent a similar occurrence, she will be doing a few adjustments to her living space.
"I will be raising the level of my kitchen because I had done that to the bedroom and the water didn't go in. It doesn't make sense to get up and cry when I can try and correct the situation," she said. Another resident Lisa Miller said flooding is nothing new for her and other residents, so on Sunday, she lay in bed and uttered a prayer for protection as she watched Elsa dump water off the roadway into her house.
"The water just sweep through the house like river. It come in pon we straight off the road and is mi and a lot of kids were inside so all mi have to do is just start pray same time say things nuh get out of hand. We ago always flood because we basically live on the sea but nothing beats prayer," Miller said.
As THE STAR team journeyed through the area, it appeared to be business as usual. A few fishermen were seen unravelling their net while a woman enquired if the news team was interested in purchasing a few pounds of fish from a nearby igloo. Another man said he too faced a battering from Elsa, but is hoping for better days.
"The rain do mi bad bad but a regular something dis. All mi do was raise mi bed and other furniture. Mi never drown still and that a di most important thing," he said.
