Peaches brings new ‘Meaning’ to her music
In an era when many artistes strive not only to get their music out there, but also want to stand out in a sea of 'sameness', a few notable individuals are getting recognition based on the sheer sultry smoothness of their voices and the powerful feeling they evoke in their listeners.
Among them is Peaches, a young woman from St Thomas whose simple early life moulded her into an individual who walks in her purpose, while pursuing her passion of sharing her voice with the world, one song at a time. In describing herself and her musical offering, Peaches said that from early on, she was exposed to a variety of music, most of which fuelled her appreciation for different musical sounds and styles.
"Peaches is a jovial, sometimes introverted, sometimes extroverted person, depending on the crowd. As an artiste, growing up listening to different genres, I would say I'm very open-minded when it comes to music because for me, it's the feeling music stirs within you and not just a specific genre," she said.
Christened Sherese Chisholm, Peaches said that she is fortunate enough to be able to put out her own music, having established her music production entity some time ago.
"I started officially producing music under my record label, Adaba Entertainment, in 2021. When I released my first single, I was a bit scared, knowing how raunchy it was. I wouldn't say I'm a bold person overall, so it was a 'stepping out of my shell' kinda moment," she said.
Coming out of her label currently is the single Meaning, a sultry song that gives off a young Lila Ike vibe without being a knock-off of her style. The song is pretty straightforward, as Peaches sings about living a life that has purpose and not one that glorifies hype and material things.
" Meaning is a song about hope. You know, 2025 opened my eyes and I scratched my brain a little and took a step back and thought about who I really am and what I really want out of this musical journey," she said.
Inspired by her love of music itself, the 27-year-old said she is proud of her versatility and being able to move easily from one mood and style to the next.
"Right now, my inspiration comes genuinely from music. I am always searching for new songs from some of my favourite artistes right now, like Sasha Keable and Raye from the United Kingdom. I'm always trying to just learn new techniques and be amazed by how they put their pieces together."
All of this from a humble country girl who, if not for music, said she would have tried her hand at farming.
"I went to Morant Bay Primary School, where I had some good times because I was on the track and field and music teams. So I went from high jumps to ringing bells and creating music. So I have always been multi-talented and fluid. I don't want to stick myself into a genre, even though it is recommended to 'find a niche'. I'm grateful to have a team that allows me to experiment, not without their comments and judgement, of course," she said.
Standing out, she said, is easy because she cannot be confined to being put into any musical box. "I can sing something sexy today and something conscious tomorrow. I don't try to fight the lyrics from my brain because it doesn't 'suit' a specific genre of music."
