Education key for Charlemont athletes

Daniel Mayhew, who has qualified for the Youth Olympics, is one of the top performing students in his year at Charlemont High School and part of the reason is the educational support offered to travelling students, according to the school's principal William Willis.

Willis told STAR Sports that once a student has to go overseas for school business, they are given additional support to complete lessons so that their travels do not interfere with their ability to learn.

"Encouragement and assistance in completing school work (is given)," said Willis.

"So if he (student) goes off for two weeks, he gets enough school work in that, so he is not backwards when he comes back. Daniel is on top now (in his grade)," he added.

Willis added that the school was happy to give students the opportunity to represent the school but their education was equally important.

"We always send our students wherever there is an opportunity. The only support that we give is students are travelling abroad we provide with them pocket money. All of our students travel with our blessings and a little money in their pockets.

"If he has an exam the exam is done before or after. That is facilitated," said Willis.
