Boy wonder disc jockey - 7-y-o is a master at the consoles
Kimarly Gordon, who prefers to be called DJ MJ, or Little Link, is making waves internationally as a disc jockey at the tender age of seven.
The United Kingdom native says he has loved music since he was only a year old.
"I've always loved music. I started deejaying when I saw my dad doing deejaying, then I fell in love with it."
His mom, Shevonne, said that she was not surprised by the leap as he has always been a musical child.
"We have videos of him as young as probably six months(where) you could see him dancing to music. By the time he was 18 months old, him setting up his things and turning them into desks and having his little play mic and singing. We have one with him singing Bob Marley's Chant Down Babylon and Nesbeth's My Dream, so he has always been musical."
Kimarly began practising his craft in 2020, at the beginning of the lockdown, after years of watching his father. "Him and daddy used to clash and put them on YouTube or Instagram Live and it just been going from then," Shevonne said.
Kimarly's father, Michael Gordon, known in the entertainment space as Silver Link, has been deejaying for over 17 years. He said it was "a little bit surprisingly" when he realised his son's level of skill and confidence at the consoles.
"I came in one evening and hear him have the mic set up and a deejay like proper artiste on the rhythm and everything like that, so it was a bit shocking. So I hide myself so he wouldn't see me and was there watching till him finish sing, and that's when I realise some kind of beast of talent inah dah house yah," the elder Gordon said.
Daddy, me can do this enuh
"And suh me deh yah wid him and we make we likkle mixtape and him will say, 'Daddy, me can do this enuh', and me give him a chance fi do it. And then me realise, you know, he really loves it."
Gordon and his wife are young MJ's biggest motivators.
"We don't pressure him to do anything, we just support him and help him when he needs it," Shevonne said.
DJ MJ told THE STAR his dad's support is extra special to him because he is not only a critical part of his support system but also his mentor.
"When I saw Dad doing it and he showed me the sound called Stone Love, it made me fall in love again. My dad is one of the biggest motivations to me."
Shevonne and Michael are from Seaforth, St Thomas and Spanish Town, St Catherine respectively. They have been living in London, England for the last 20 years. Young DJ MJ was born in the UK and has only travelled to Jamaica twice, but his parents keep him close to his roots.
"Although we live abroad, we are very much Jamaican. It's very much around us. He's been to Jamaica twice already so between me and his dad he's very Jamaican just like us," the boy's mother said.
DJ MJ said that he enjoys both music and other hobbies like playing football. The young star said that he hopes to be a mathematician when he grows up, but he is determined to maintain his deep-seated passion for music.
"My biggest goal is to be the best DJ in the world alongside helping the environment, like cleaning, cleaning litter off the floor and like those stuff," he said.
